Tallinn - advice for disabled travellers and wheelchair users

Cobbled streets, narrow doorways and high steps make Tallinn's old town a challenge for travellers with mobility problems. However, newer constructions and many public buildings are reasonably accessible, and the situation is constantly improving. With some research and effort, a visit to this city is quite feasible.

Arrivals
Assistance with an aisle chair will be provided at Tallinn airport and there is a disabled toilet in the building. Arrivals by sea will find Tallinn port is also fairly accessible, with lifts, sliding doors, disabled toilets and disabled parking.

Accommodation
Various hotels in Tallinn are accessible, with the SAS Radisson apparently having four rooms with roll-in showers. Contact the sources mentioned below in 'further information' to find more options.
The SAS Radisson Hotel, Rävala pst 3, 10143 Tallinn (tel: +372 682 3500; fax: +372 (6) 82 3501; www.radissonsas.com).
The Hotel Metropol, Roseni 13, 10111 Tallinn (tel: +372 667 4500/555/668/669; fax: +372 667 4600; www.metropol.ee).

Getting around

  • By train
Although some railway stations have ramps and access, this is not a general rule. Trains do not have disabled toilets and some platforms are so low that wheelchair travellers will need to be lifted on and off.
  • By bus
Several new buses, trams and trolley-buses with low floors have recently been introduced, and their routes are marked in yellow on English-language timetables (see http://soiduplaan.tallinn.ee).
  • By taxi
These two taxi companies have wheelchair- accessible vehicles:
Toiran - Tel/fax: +372 673 1933; mob: +372 522 7477; email: toiran(at)hot.ee. The despatchers don't speak good English, so it may be better to write an email.
Tulika Takso - Tel: +372 612 0040; fax: +372 612 0002; email: info(at)tulika.ee. This service must be ordered at least one day in advance.
