Many hotels, even the more expensive
ones, don't have a bathroom catering for disabled people (roll-in
shower etc). So if you don't want to be severely restricted
in your travel plans, you must improvise!
Toilet.
For trips away, I've adapted my manual wheelchair so it can
be used as a toilet/commode chair. It is possible exchange
your normal cushion with a pressure relieving padded toilet
cushion. Don't forget to make skin care your priority here!
Washing.
Be prepared for regular bedbaths. You'll be lucky to find
roll in showers outside the 'developed' world, and often a
hose-down in the sunshine or a bucket of lukewarm water over
your head is the best you'll get. Try to do this in private
to avoid crowds of amused children. I throw a bin liner over
my chair backrest for these showers, and dry it thoroughly
or let it dry in the sun afterwards.
This is advice
only. You are responsible for care of your body - don't take
unnecessary risks!
